What Does an Eye Exam Include?

Most people would rather do anything than visit a doctor--whether that doctor is a dentist, a physician, or an eye doctor. Luckily for you and your family, an eye exam at Vision Associates is probably the easiest and quickest doctor visit you'll ever make!

Whether you want eyeglasses, contacts, or just want to check the health of your eyes, you'll get the care you need in a surprisingly short amount time. The best thing is, it's absolutely painless.

Talk to Your Eye Doctor

This first thing you'll do is talk to one of our eleven eye doctors. The doctor will review your eye history and ask you how you're doing. This is a great time to tell him or her about any eye problems you're experiencing. This isn't just limited to vision problems--if you're having any type of issues like itching or pressure on the eye, be sure and tell your doctor. Be sure to mention any headaches, too.

The Eye Chart

Next, you'll look at letters on an eye chart. This is one of the easiest tests you can ever take, with no wrong answers or bad grades--just a chance to get any help you may need with your vision.

Eye Movement Test

This is a simple test to check how your eye moves, and how quickly. This helps to make sure your eyes track like they should, and that the muscles around your eyes are functioning properly.

Pupil Dilation

Your eye doctor will give you drops to dilate your pupils. This will allow the doctor to examine your internal eye health. This exam is critical to preventing and treating eye conditions that could lead to vision loss.

Slit Lamp Examination

Your doctor will use this special kind of microscope to check your eyes for any abnormalities or problems. Even if your vision is 20/20, it's important to have an eye checkup every year for your ocular health. Your doctor may place drops in your eyes, in order to check the front surface of the eye. The doctor may also use a lens to examine the back of the eye.

Intra-ocular Pressure Test

It's important to test the intra-ocular pressure because by the time you've noticed any symptoms, you may already have damage to your optic nerve. This is why it's so important for your ophthalmologist or optometrist at Vision Associates to check your intra-ocular pressure every year. The intra-ocular pressure alone does not determine if someone has glaucoma. Patients should also be dilated to examine the optic nerve head.

The Refraction Test

This is what many people think of as the "down to business" part of checking your sight. During the refraction test, your optometrist will check for any vision problems. This is the step where your eye doctor determines whether you need eyeglasses (or contacts), and if so, how strong your prescription should be.
